“Looking Down on Munich” is a fantastic collection of images that puts a new spin on street photography, by Robert Götzfried.

For a bit of visual inspiration, we take a look at photographer Robert Götzfried‘s “Looking Down on Munich” project. Looking at a city from a different perspective discloses abstract shapes and patterns, resulting in strikingly unusual images. This project forms part of Götzfried’s larger “Look down on Cities” series where he explores innovative street photography techniques.”When I thought about the visual concept of my “look down on cities’ series, I naturally chose the city that’s most important to me: Munich. It’s the city that I like to call my home – I always wanted to capture “my city” in my own way” he says. Götzfried wanted the series to stand out, to show something different from that you might expect from the more traditional street photography. “That meant no portraits, no faces. It had to be 2.0 Street Photography: I wanted to hide emotions and instead focus on the presence of humans in their current environment.”

Lines, colors and patterns

“My work is very graphically oriented generally – straight lines, patterns. I like to photograph scenes and objects with clear order – I think this is an additional side effect of a graphic designer over a photographer. I always think in terms of grids, shapes, lines, patterns and colors”.

Getting the best out of the equipment

“Of course, I need a reliable equipment, to ensure that I never miss the opportunity for the perfect shot. I shot this series with my Canon EOS 6D and my Canon EF 24-105mm 1: 4 L IS USM. This lens is lightweight, has a very flexible zoom range and ensures excellent image quality. The EOS 6D allows me the choice of very high ISO values and then supplies still high-quality images. I made all the shots freehand without a tripod or other accessories. Then it was only a matter of time and patience. ” [Canon, Germany]
