Canon EOS 1D X Mark II features:
Sensor and image processor features:
20.2 megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor
The Canon 1D X Mark II features a 20.2 megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor with high latitude and gapless microlenses to boost light capturing capabilities and produce imagery with exceptional dynamic range, colour accuracy and low noise levels.
High ISO Sensitivity range of 50-409600
A wide ISO range of 50-409600 gives the 1D X MK II the power and flexibility to shoot in almost any light condition. When shooting at the top end of the ISO range you will be able to capture sharp images in indoor, night, and low light conditions, while at ISO 50 you will be able to stop down on shutterspeed and/or aperture for creative effects. The wide ISO/light-sensitivity range is made possible by the combined power of the full-frame low pixel density sensor with gapless microlenses and the dual DIGIC 6+ processors.
Dual DIGIC 6+ Processors
The EOS 1D X Mark II uses a front-end processing circuit together with the Dual “DIGIC 6+” processors for high-speed signal processing. The incredible power of these processors enables increased latitude, improved noise reduction at both high and low ISO range, renders images with accurate colours, 16 fps shooting in live view, and full-frame internal DCI 4K recording at up to 60 fps or Full HD up to 120 fps.
Uncompressed 14-bit RAW image capture
By capturing RAW files in 14-bit, users will be able to further push post processing for even more accurate colours, wider dynamic range and improve noise reduction.
Focusing and performance features:
14 fps with full AF/AE tracking, or 16 fps in Live View shooting
The Canon 1DX Mark II features a blistering maximum mirror drive speed of 14 fps while shooting RAW images and mainting full autofocus and autoexposure tracking, or an even faster 16 frames-per-second in live view shooting. These fast continues shooting speeds enables you to capture decisive moments on extremely fast moving subjects.
170 Raw image buffer, and near infinite JPEG image buffer
The Dual DIGIC 6+ processors, CFast 2 card slot and other technologies provides the 1D X MK II with a massive buffer of up to 170 Raw images*, or a near limitless JPEG buffer* that is only limited to available space and battery life. These advancements enables photographers to shoot care free and not worry about missing a shot due to a full buffer.
*Buffer when using the fastest current available Cfast 2 card, CF buffers will be slightly less.
Red illuminated 61-point expanded autofocus system
The 1DX Mark II features 61 autofocus points that are placed over a wide area and are illumined in red. The wider area gives greater composition freedom while the red illuminated focus points helps to identify the selected point in dark/low light or in high-contrast shooting.
41 cross-type and 5 dual cross-type AF points
41 cross-type and 5 dual cross-type AF points* further extend the reach of the EOS-1D X Mark II’s focus capabilities. Cross type AF points provide greater autofocus precision over a wider area of the frame ensuring correct focus, important for fast moving subjects. All 61 AF and 41 cross-type AF points are individually selectable.
*The number of focusing points, cross-type focusing points, and dual cross-type AF points vary depending on the lens used
Large Zone AF point selection
The Large Zone AF feature enables you to enlarge or decrease the size of your focusing point. This makes tracking moving subjects easier, faster and more precise.
61 AF Points, With 21 Cross-type AF Points at f/8 (teleconverter setups)
Wildlife and sports photographers often have to use super telephoto lenses with extenders/teleconverters to get closer to their subjects. This limits the AF usability because of the resulting f/8 aperture setting. The 1-point f/8 AF compatibility on the 1D X has been significantly increased to a maximum of 61 points* on the Canon 1D X II, with 21 cross-type points. The Zone AF - which makes subject tracking easy - and EOS iTR AF provides powerful subject tracking support even with super telephoto and extender shooting.
* The number of focusing points and cross-type focusing points vary depending on the lens used
Auto Focus at EV-3
The Canon 1DX Mark II's AF system makes it easier to keep the subject in focus, even in challenging light. The AF low-intensity limit has been improved to EV-3, making it easy to shoot in scenes where autofocusing was previously impossible or too slow and inaccurate, such as dark locations.
360k RGB+IR Metering Sensor
The camera features an RGB+IR metering sensor with 360,000 pixels. The data of the RGB and infrared pixels are continuously sent to the processors to improve ambient light metering; flash metering; focusing speed and accuracy; and subject recognition from Canon's EOS Intelligent Tracking and Recognition (EOS iTR) system.
AI Servo AF III+
Canon’s AI servo AF III+ features an AF algorithm that, along with the EOS Intelligent Tracking and Recognition (EOS iTR) system, improves the tracking sensitivity in scenes where subject movements may occur suddenly, delivering precise and accurate focusing even in situations where focusing is difficult.
Six AF Case tracking settings
The EOS 1D X Mark II features six AF Case study settings to help you choose the most appropriate option for your subject. These case studies provide different setups for the three different AF preference settings of Tracking Sensitivity, Acceleration/Deceleration tracking and AF Point Auto Switching. These parameters can be further customized based on personal preferences.
CFast 2 and CF memory card slots
Canon 1D X II is the first EOS stills camera to feature a CFast 2.0™ card slot in addition to a CompactFlash card slot. CFast 2 cards currently feature write speed of up to 440MB/s, which is three times faster than the fastest CompactFlash (150 MB/s). Such fast write speeds allow a continuous RAW shooting burst of 170 full resolution images. Additionally, exFAT format support removes the 4 GB file size limitation, doing away with the necessity to merge files when recording movies.
Internal Motion JPEG DCI 4K recording at 60p
The camera features internal DCI 4K (4096 x 2160) video recording. 4K is the latest high definition video recording resolution and features 4 times more pixels than Full HD. The 4K movies are recorded at 4:2:2 sampling and 8-bit color internally on the storage media and can be recorded at fast frame rates of up to 60p (60 frames per second) in a high quality motion JPEG format at up to 800Mbps for up to 29 minutes and 59 seconds. Users also have the option of extracting a 8.8MP still from a single video frame.
Full Frame Full HD 120p recording with uncompressed live feed via HDMI
The Canon 1DX II utilises the whole sensor when recording in Full HD, this gives the same wide field as when shooting stills. Recording frame rates in Full HD goes up to 120 frames per second at 360Mbps, and will enable movie-makers and enthusiasts to make stunning slow motion scenes. Additionally a live and uncompressed Full HD video feed can be output via the HDMI port for recording onto external video recorders.
Onboard stereo microphone with external 3.5mm microphone and headphone jacks
Audio can be recorded using the on-board stereo microphone or an optional external mic can also be used via the 3.5mm mic jack. Real time audio monitoring is possible, too, via the 3.5mm headphone jack.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF & Movie Servo AF
With significant improvements in AF operation, the EOS-1D X Mark II camera can be an indispensible and remarkably portable moviemaking tool. Continuous AF, even during 4K recording, is made easy thanks to the EOS-1D X Mark II's Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which is compatible with all Canon EF lenses. Focus points can be selected automatically, or specified on the camera's new touch panel LCD screen. Critical focus throughout the frame can be easily confirmed by enlarging stills grabbed from video recordings. The EOS-1D X Mark II's Movie Servo AF is compatible with all frame rates and resolutions, and can be customized to set tracking sensitivity, AF speed and even Face Tracking priority. These advanced features help make the EOS-1D X Mark II a truly versatile and convenient camera for 4K and Full HD moviemaking.
Heat dispersal for longer video recording
When shooting movies or capturing images continuously via high-speed mode for a long time without breaks, the CMOS sensor and Dual "DIGIC 6+" processors deal with a massive amount of data, which in turn generates a significant amount of heat. This heat is transferred from the sensor and processors to the top of the battery chamber and dissipates via a special heat pipe, ensuring the camera is always ready for use. The heat dispersal system, along with the powerful processors, enables continuous 4K video recording of up to 29 min 59 sec.
Operation and other features:
3.2-inch touch panel LCD with 1.62 million dots
The EOS 1D X Mark II camera's 3.2-inch touch panel TFT LCD monitor has approximately 1.62 million dots, anti-reflective construction and features Canon's Clear View LCD II technology for bright, sharp display in any number of shooting situations. Its new touchscreen function allows AF point switching and image magnification during Live View shooting and movie shooting, providing convenient operation. The LCD monitor can be ideal for reviewing settings and images, as well as for shooting in Live View mode. In Live View, grid lines can be displayed in 9 sections, 24 sections or 9 sections with diagonals, as well as the dual-axis electronic level, which helps ensure accurate level by displaying both roll and pitch in 1-degree increments. For image review, the EOS-1D X Mark II has a dedicated Magnify/Reduce button. While pressing the button, zooming in or out (up to 10x) is achieved simply by turning the Main Dial. Images can be protected or erased quickly, individually or in batches, and slideshows can be created with some or all images and can be sequenced by date, folders, movies, stills, protection or rating. A feature guide can be accessed for the selected menu, providing detailed reference information when needed.
Weather resistant magnesium alloy construction
In line with previous EOS-1 series cameras, the EOS-1D X Mark II is designed for continued professional use in harsh environments. It features the same dust and drip-proof construction as the EOS-1D X, using a total of 76 seals around buttons and body joints to help keep water and dust out of the internals.
Durable and reliable
The EOS-1D X Mark II shutter is designed to work for approximately 400,000 cycles, and with such a high level of performance, the mirror and associated controls have been designed to match that level of ability. Not only are the inner drive mechanisms designed and evaluated for overall durability as a pro model, but even the buttons and controls used by the photographer are tested for the same level of durability.
Intelligent Viewfinder II
As a professional the last thing you want to do is take your eye off the action. Time spent away from the viewfinder risks missing a crucial moment, which is why Canon engineers have listened carefully to feedback from the EOS community and brought more information to the EOS-1D X Mark II viewfinder, which can be customised to suit the needs of the photographer. It is now easy to change settings and check camera status without removing your eye from the viewfinder.
Check and change all settings in the viewfinder including shooting mode, metering mode, white balance and drive mode as well as be alerted for Flicker detection. Approximately 100 percent view through the viewfinder ensures you can see the entire frame you’re capturing while a 20mm eye-point gives an immersive view of the action in front of the camera, making it easy to frame the image exactly the way you want it.
Dual Axis Electronic Level
A Dual Axis Electronic Level helps photographers to keep the camera level when shooting – a bonus when striving for straight horizons, or when shooting architecture. Both pitch (forward-backward) and roll (side-to-side) movement is detected in 1˚ increments, and the level is shown both in the viewfinder (above the focusing points) and on the LCD screen, making it a useful tool at night when reference points are hard to see in the viewfinder.
Custom Quick Control Screen
Every photographer works differently and has particular requirements when it comes to checking and changing shooting information and parameters. With ease of workflow in mind, it is possible to change the type, size and position of icons on the camera’s Custom Quick Control screen quickly and easily, so favourite settings can be found without fuss.
The EOS-1D X Mark II camera features a built-in GPS unit, helping photographers and filmmakers not only tag their images with critical location data, but also adjust the time and timestamp on the camera automatically. Offering compatibility with American GPS satellites, Russian GLONASS satellites and Japanese quasi-zenith satellites Michibiki, the EOS-1D X Mark II's GPS information is reliably accurate virtually anywhere you go.
In-camera lens aberration and diffraction correction
An in-camera lens correction function allows photographers to work at smaller apertures without any concerns over image quality degradation caused by diffraction and/or abberation*.
* Certain lenses do not have lens aberration correction data.
Fine Detail Picture Style
The ‘Fine Detail’ Picture Style originally developed for the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R has been included in the EOS-1D X Mark II to maximise the amount of detail captured by the cameras’ 20.2 Megapixel sensor. This setting prioritises gradation of tones and emphasises fine detail. Fine Detail is intended for images that will be used straight from the camera, without post-production.
Fine Detail Picture Style features three adjustable sharpening parameters, which give more control over the sharpening performed in-camera on JPEG files. The parameters are similar to those found in the Unsharp Mask filter in Adobe Photoshop and Canon’s DPP software.
The ‘Strength’ slider adjusts how much sharpening is applied to edges in the image. The ‘Fineness’ slider determines the size of the details that are sharpened, move it to the left to sharpen smaller details. The ‘Threshold’ slider specifies how much contrast there needs to be in a part of the picture before it is considered an edge and sharpened. At low settings even subtle edges can be sharpened.
AWB: Ambience Priority/White Priority
The EOS-1D X Mark II features a choice of Auto White Balance (AWB) settings that take a different approach to artificial light. ‘Ambience Priority’ aims to retain some of the warm colour tones from artificial light sources in order to preserve some of the atmosphere of a scene, similar to the conventional AWB setting on other EOS cameras, while ‘White Priority’ eliminates most of the warmth from tungsten lighting and tries to give colour-neutral images where possible.
Under flickering light such as fluorescents, using a faster shutter speed may result in irregular exposures and colours due to the light’s flicker frequency. EOS-1D X Mark II – like the EOS 7D Mark II, EOS 5DS R and EOS 5DS – detects flicker frequency of light sources and adapts the shooting timings to capture the image near peak brightness to reduce flicker effects. This function works with a flicker frequency of 100Hz and 120Hz and has an improved algorithm to prevent the incorrect detection of flickering light.
