Other Features
The main feature of the GFX 50S is its simply gigantic 51.4MP medium format sensor. The large sensor provides many benefits including a wider dynamic range, wider field of view, improved depth of field, and improved low light performance. Additionally, the large megapixel count will capture even the smallest of details, while providing ample room for cropping.
The medium format sensor features a wide dynamic range of 14-stops. The wide dynamic range offers better details in both bright highlights and dark shadows without clipping (going pure white or pure black). This wide dynamic range combined with the sensor's wide field of view will make the camera great at capturing vibrant landscapes.
The medium format sensor in the GFX 50S is about 70% larger than a full frame 35mm sensor. The larger pixel surface area provides a 35mm equivalent crop factor of about 0.8, meaning a 63mm medium format lens on the Fuji GFX50S will be equivalent to a 50mm lens on a full frame DSLR. This wider field of view is exceptionally useful for landscape shooting, as short wide angle lenses will enable you to capture more scenery.
The Fujifilm GFX50S features a wide light sensitivity (ISO) range to enable users to make the best of the camera, no matter how bright or dim the available light is. In bright light the GFX50s can stop down to ISO 50, enabling you to shoot slower shutter speeds or wider apertures; and in low light the higher light sensitivities from ISO 3200 up to ISO 102400 will provide exceptional low light performance so you don't have to slow down your shutter-speed and/or open-up your aperture.
The Fuji GFX 50S uses the X-Processor Pro image processing engine to make the best of the 51.4 megapixel CMOS sensor. The image processing engine uses several intelligent algorithms to speed up continuous shooting, autofocus, live-view, video recording, and general camera performance; as well as reduce/remove image artifacts (including noise), and improve colour accuracy.
The GFX 50S medium format camera supports saving files as either JPEG, uncompressed 14-bit RAW, lossless compressed 14-bit RAW or 8-bit TIFF. RAW files contains all the data from the sensor, and vastly improves post processing (image editing) so users can get even more accurate colours, wider dynamic range, and improved noise reduction.
Conventional medium format cameras are usually large, heavy, slow and extremely hard to work with; but not the Fujifilm GXF 50S. This digital medium format camera features no mirror and therefore is more compact and weighs less (only 825g with a battery); it even looks, feels and functions like a professional DSLR. This means that the GFX 50S will fit in almost any camera bag; is easy to travel with; and can easily be mounted on drones, tripods, gimbals, or any other support.
The body of the Fuji GFX50 camera is made from robust and durable magnesium alloy to protect the camera internals while keeping the weight low. The body is weather-sealed in 58 points to achieve a high level of resistance to dust and moisture.
The Fujifilm GFX 50S features a large, removable 0.5-inch, 3.69M-dot EVF with a magnification of 0.85x and 100% coverage. The EVF attaches to the camera's hotshoe mount, includes its own top hotshoe mount, offers a diopter adjustment range of -4m-1 to2m-1, and features a live 3D electronic level or RGB Histogram display.
The GFX50 S features a 3.2 inch 2.36M-dot LCD touch monitor. The smart touchscreen panel enables intuitive operation and tilts in three directions (90° up, 45° down and 60° to the right) for easy framing and shooting from high or low angles. The touchscreen can also control autofocus, making focus changes quick and effortless; and live zoom, to confirm manual focus.
The top of the GFX 50S body features a 1.28-inch monochrome LCD monitor. The monitor is fully customisable, can display up to 8 current camera settings, and can be viewed in all conditions due to a backlight function.
The GFX 50S features the world's first mechanical focal-plane shutter that is specifically designed for a medium format mirrorless camera. The mechanical shutter features a shutter speed of up to 1/4000 sec., is extremely quiet and can withstand over 150,000 actuations. For using wanting a faster shutter speed the Fuji GFX 50S also incorporates an electronic shutter that can sync up to 1/16000sec.
Focusing on the GFX 50S can be done through a wide range of contrast-detect AF points that covers most of the sensor. The system natively uses a total of 117 AF points but can be expanded to 425 points for critical point autofocus (useful when shooting at extremely shallow depth of field).
Focus point selection is possible through either the integrated focus lever or the rear touchscreen. Both ways provide an easy, quick and near effortless way to control focus.
The camera also features face / eye detect to automatically detect and focus on your subject's face or eyes. Priority can be given to either the right or left eye.
When composing, a distance indicator bar on the monitor can be used to check depth of field. You can choose between either pixel basis or film format basis options. A focus peaking function enables users to view an enlarged zoom for more accurate focusing. Focus peaking can easily be done by double-tapping an area on the rear LCD.
The combination of settings on the Shutter Speed Dial, ISO Dial and Aperture Ring allows users to effortlessly switch between four different exposure modes: Aperture Priority AE (A), Shutter Speed Priority AE (S), Program AE (P) and Manual. As dials are used for main exposure settings, you can adjust settings even when the camera is turned off. The Command Position (C/T) also enables Command Dial operations.
Adding to the camera's ease of use are 10 customizable Fn buttons. Different options can also be assigned to Short Cut Q (Quick) menu items. Frequently used settings can be registered in My Menu while Custom Registration allows you to save and rename Film Simulation and image quality settings.
Flash photography users will be happy to know that the GFX 50S supports high-speed-sync flash (HSS / FP), features a pc-sync port, and supports multiple flash lighting. At time of writing high-speed flash is only available on the optional Fujifilm EF-X500 flash. When using other flash / speedlight units the camera's maximum flash sync speed will be 1/125sec.
The GFX 50S camera incorporates a continuous shooting mode with a burst rate of up to 3.0 fps. The camera will continue shooting until the buffer fills up (up to 8 frames in RAW, and up to 13 frames in compressed RAW).
The Fujifilm GFX 50S supports Full HD video recording at frame rates of up to 29.97p at 36Mbps, or HD video recording at 29.97 and 18Mbps. Film Simulation effects, such as ACROS for ultra high-quality monochrome and CLASSIC CHROME for a documentary-themed look, can also be applied to video.
Make easy 30 second voice notes to keep track of shooting data in situations where writing notes is impractical.
Install the free FUJIFILM Camera Remote app on your smartphone or tablet to carry out a location data search, remotely control the camera and transfer or view in-camera images, all without having to enter a password. This functionality is also useful when shooting landscapes with the camera mounted on a tripod.
The Fujifilm GFX 50S features a G-lens mount to support a new range of FUJINON G lenses. The G-mount features a diameter of 65mm, flange back distance of 26.7mm and minimum back focus distance of 16.7mm. It uses as many as 12 electronic contact points for sending and receiving data. The short back focus distance, made possible because of the Fujifilm mirrorless system's structure, affords greater freedom in lens design to contribute to the development of fast, compact and high-performance GF lenses while preventing vignetting to deliver edge-to-edge sharpness. These lenses will feature an aperture ring, a popular feature in the X Series, and have a new C (Command) Position on the ring to enable aperture adjustments with the Command Dial on the camera body. Each lens will be dust and weather resistant, built to withstand operation at temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit -10 degrees Celsius allowing photographers to take them outdoors with confidence in challenging weather conditions.
The current line-up of Fujinon G lenses includes a GF63mmF2.8 R WR, GF32-64mmF4 R LM WR, GF120mmF4 R LM OIS WR Macro; and more lenses including a 110mmF2 R LM WR, 23mmF4 R LM WR, GF45mmF2.8 R WR will be made available later in 2017.
An optional H-mount adaptor enables H Mount lenses, including SUPER EBC FUJINON HC lenses for GX645AF, to be mounted on the GFX 50S. The adaptor supports lens shutter operations and aperture priority AE. Focusing is manual only, but the mount features electronic contacts to generate and record lens correction data for individual lenses. A detachable tripod base plate is also included.
The GFX50S camera features several film simulation modes. The film simulation modes are developed with Fujifilm's colour producing know-how over 80 years of photographic film manufacturing, Film Simulation allows you to reproducing a variety of colors and tones as if using different photographic films. Film modes includes:
Standard mode for general use that faithfully reproduces 'memory colours'; colours just as you remember them.
A combination of high saturation and 'memory colours', this option reproduces vivid colours, making it ideal for landscapes.
Combining a soft effect with high saturation, this option delivers radiant skin tones and smooth gradation.
Delivering subtle colours and beautifully muted tones, this simulation is reminiscent of vintage reversal film.
Produce portraits with sharp contrast even in flat light. This option delivers natural skin tones based on 'memory colour' technology.
Reproduces accurate, natural skin tones in portraits shot under controlled light.
Premium monochrome mode delivers fine texture, deep blacks and smoother tones.
General use monochrome mode that offers three filter options (Ye, R and G), just like ACROS.
Adds a warm tone across the frame for a sepia look. When applied to a retro subject, it creates a nostalgic look.
Graininess is added to the entire frame to simulate the look of film-based images.
Provides an extra boost to saturated colours for a richer result.
