Eugene van der Merwe

Eugene van der Merwe is the Head of Department for Photography at the Orms Cape Town School of Photography where he specialises in teaching the technical and practical aspects of photography. He holds a National Diploma in Photography from CPUT, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art and Master of Fine Art, both with distinction, from the Michaelis School of Fine Art at UCT. Eugene’s photographic practice has been fed by a broad range of interests, including work in a variety of commercial genres and numerous personal projects focused mostly on landscape, portraiture, and constructed images. Currently, his practice reflects on the indeterminacy and constructed nature of the photographic image, and he is exploring experimental approaches to analogue and hybrid modes of photography to reflect on, among other things, intersections between place, history, and positionality.
