In a statement from Tamron, the new 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD is hailed as "the lightest and most compact f/2.8 telephoto zoom in its class", with a length of 149mm at the 70mm setting and weighing in at just 810g we can see why! This new and light telephoto lens gives Sony shooters more lens without the needs to rearrange their kit.
Tamron's 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD features 19 lens elements in 14 groups which include; one XLD element, five LD elements, one GM element, and two hybrid aspherical elements. Pair these additions with the second-gen Broad-Band Anti-Reflection coating and you can expect the highest standard of image quality at every focal length.
Let's talk autofocus, although the name may have given this one away. The addition of Tamron's first-ever linear motor, a Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive motor, or VXD is faster and more precise than Tamron's previous versions. This new lens uses two of these motors working together to allow for optimal image quality throughout the zoom range, even at the minimum focus distance.
As with the other lenses in Tamron's Di III lineup, the 70-180mm f/2.8 is moisture-resistant and features a fluorine coating on the front element allowing it to repel both oil and water. The addition of a zoom lock switch gives you peace of mind when transporting this lens.
