Jonathan Berman

Jonathan Berman is a Cape Town-based filmmaker, cinematographer and visual storyteller with extensive experience across commercials, documentary, branded content and emerging media technologies. His career is defined by a practical, hands-on approach to filmmaking, combining a strong visual sensibility with a deep technical understanding of cameras, lighting, editing and production workflows. His work spans the full production process, from creative concept development through to final delivery, with a particular interest in finding innovative ways to tell stories and engage audiences.

Jonathan has worked across a diverse range of productions and has consistently embraced new technologies, including mobile filmmaking, interactive content, virtual production and AI-driven visual workflows. In 2009, he received the Highway Africa New Media Award for his work on the hyperlocal news platform 790tv.co.za, and has since trained hundreds of aspiring filmmakers and visual storytellers.

As a lecturer at the Cape Town School of Photography, Jonathan brings real-world industry experience directly into the classroom. His teaching philosophy balances creative exploration with practical technical skills, encouraging students to understand not only how to use professional tools, but why visual decisions matter. He is passionate about developing adaptable, confident storytellers equipped for the rapidly evolving world of contemporary filmmaking.
