Meet a half-frame camera in a digital format, the Fujifilm X half Digital Camera. This compact and lightweight point-and-shoot camera features a unique vertical 18MP 1" sensor design. Fixed on the Fujifilm X half Digital Camera body, you will find a wide-angle prime aspherical 10.8mm f/2.8 lens offering a 32mm equivalent focal length.
13 distinct Film Simulations can be chosen from and are displayed in the secondary LCD on the rear, mimicking the look of the rear of a film camera to show what film is loaded. Additionally, there are 26 filters to add on top of the Film Simulations.
Some useful additions make the Fujifilm X half Digital Camera fun and easy to use. These include a rear vertically orientated LCD touchscreen to match the vertically positioned sensor. You will not find a Menu button, the menu is accessed and located within the LCD screen. The shutter button on the top plate is surrounded by an exposure compensation dial, allowing for +/-3 EV adjustment.
To enhance the feel of a film camera, you will find an integrated Frame Advance Lever that mimics the function of winding on a film camera. When shooting in Film Camera Mode, the lever allows you to advance to the next frame. The 2-in-1 shooting mode is accessed with the lever when shooting in normal mode. To easily display the last photo taken, simply press the lever against the camera.
The Fujifilm X half Digital Camera is also well suited for recording video, perfectly formatted to share to social media. The sensor records 1080 x 1440 at 24 FPS, and you will find a built-in stereo mic on top of the camera body.
A camera built for sharing, the Fuji X-Half Camera wirelessly connects to the optional (not included) Fujifilm INSTAX Printer for immediate printing and sharing via the dedicated, free-to-download X half mobile app for both Android and iOS. This app can also be used to develop your images made in the Film Camera Mode.
18MP 1" Sensor, 3:4 Vertical Aspect Ratio
This compact and lightweight point-and-shoot camera features a unique vertical 18MP 3:4 still and video, 1" sensor design that is mounted vertically.
This mode works alongside the built-in Film Simulation Modes, producing filmic and expressive images that benefit a /-3 EV exposure compensation dial and manual exposure control settings that are adjustable via the lens's aperture ring and from the rear touchscreen.
Film Camera Mode
While clearly paying homage to film photography, the X half camera can be configured to shoot in Film Camera mode. In this setting, you are required to choose one Film Simulation Mode and a 36, 54, or 72-shot "roll" of film.
When working in Film Camera Mode, your results will only be visible once the "roll" is done and digitally "developed", this can be done in the free-to-download FUJIFILM App, or once you have transferred the files to your computer.
When working in Film Camera Mode, your rear LCD will only display a frame counter, an AF/MF toggle, and an option to imprint a timestamp to the image (something not found in film photography), a zone focusing scale if working with manual focus. In this mode, all image preview and review options are disabled.
To further the feel of using a film camera, you even have a Film Advance Lever to advance frames. Without having the comfort of a large LCD screen to assist in composing your shot, you are solely limited to the optical viewfinder, and use either autofocus with no confirmation or zone focus manually.
Film Simulation Modes
The Fuji X-half Digital Camera features 13 distinct Film Simulation modes that pair well with the Film Camera Mode. On the rear, you will find a secondary LCD touchscreen that mimics the look of the window found on film cameras, showing what film is loaded. You can then also use this screen to cycle between the Film Simulation Modes.
Some of the 13 Film Simulation Modes include the ultra-vibrant Velvia, the nostalgic Classic Chrome, and the artistic black-and-white Acros; and the Grain Effect setting allows you to adjust the apparent graininess of each film type. Further, you will find some top-up 26 filters to add on top of the Film Simulations, these are all inspired by the distinct traits of film. These include Light Leak, Halation, Expired Film, and Double Exposure.
2-in1 Shooting Mode
A common way to share half-frame film photos is to show sequential frames next to each other as a diptych. This is due to two half frames comprising a single full-frame; using this method makes it easy for film trimming, printing and sharing.
Recreating this effect, a 2-in-1 function automatically creates in-camera diptychs from sequential exposures, this applies to either photos or video.
Wide-Angle Prime Lens
The Fujifilm X half Digital Camera features a fixed 10.8mm f/2.8 aspherical lens with a 32mm equivalent focal length. This wide-angle lens is well-suited for everyday shooting and works well with a variety of subjects. Around the lens, you will find a manual aperture ring that incorporates a tab to make aperture switching easier. An 'A' position on the ring can force the camera into shutter-speed priority or program exposure modes.
You will also find a manual focusing ring down to 10cm. In Film Mode, the ring can still shift focus with the set distance shown on the zone focusing scale.
Design Details
You will find the viewfinder in the left corner, with the idea to mimic the feel of a rangefinder. Through the viewfinder, you will not be able to see any shooting information, and the eye sensor will automatically switch off the LCD screen when detected. The rear LCD is also vertically orientated to match the sensor, and the screen also also used to navigate through the menu and configure your shooting settings.
Located next to the main LCD is a smaller pill-shaped sub LCD touchscreen that commonly displays the chosen Film Simulation mode in use. When in the menu, this is used for navigation.
On the front, you will find an integrated flash to illuminate subjects in difficult light conditions, along with a cold shoe on the top plate where additional accessories can be added, like external lights or microphones.
Vertical Video
With the Fujifilm X half Digital Camera being focused on film photography, it can also handle recording video that is perfectly formatted for sharing straight to social media, thanks to the vertical orientation and small file size.
The sensor records 1080 x 1440 at 24 fps, there are dedicated slow-motion settings up to 200%, and there is a built-in stereo microphone on top of the camera.
Sharing and Printing
A camera built for sharing, the Fuji X-Half Camera wirelessly connects to the optional (not included) Fujifilm INSTAX Printer for immediate printing and sharing via the dedicated, free-to-download X half mobile app for both Android and iOS. This app can also be used to develop your images made in the Film Camera Mode.
