The Sony FE 28-70mm f/2 GM Lens forms part of Sony's G Master lineup that is reserved for Sony's highest-performing optics, with the best sharpness, smoothest bokeh, utmost speed, and best overall performance. The constant f/2 maximum aperture is a full stop faster than an f/2.8 lens, to further excel in low light conditions and offer greater control over depth of field. Lens elements found in the FE 28-70mm f/2 GM include XA, Super ED, aspherical, and ED elements, this is to yield high sharpness and smooth rendering to suit subjects ranging from architecture and landscapes to portraiture and weddings.
On the front glass element, Sony's Nano AR Coating II is applied to suppress flare to produce rich contrast and bright colours in a variety of lighting conditions. aspherical. An 11-blade rounded diaphragm results and a smooth, circular bokeh quality.
Throughout the focusing range, high image quality is maintained due to the floating focus design. This results in matched sharpness from infinity to the 1.2' minimum focusing distance.

The employment of four XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors ensures fast, accurate and precise autofocus performance. This focusing system is compatible with fast continuous shooting at speeds of up to 120 fps, and high-speed video recording at up to 240 fps. To further promote the performance and quicker autofocus performance, the FE 28-70mm f2 lens features an internal focusing speed and maintains the lens length during use and zooming in and out.
The Focus breathing has been greatly reduced optically as support is given the Breathing Compensation in select cameras to effectively eliminate angle of view shifts while changing the zoom position.

Portable and Nimble Design

Even with the huge maximum aperture and versatile range, the Sony FE 28-70mm f/2 GM still manages to maintain a portable, relatively lightweight design that is well suitable for both handheld shooting along with everyday use. With a 28% larger design and 24% heavier than the 24-70 f2.8 GM II it still manages to be twice as bright.
On the lens barrel, you will find a manual aperture ring for tactile control which can be de-clicked for a smooth and silent iris pull. You will also find two programmable focus hold buttons and a focus mode switch for intuitive focus control.
The physical lens design employs both metal and plastic components to maximise the low weight and durable design. The dust- and moisture-resistant design includes rubber gaskets along every seam and a rubber ring sealing at the lens mount to protect the camera body during use in inclement weather conditions.
