This course starts with an introduction to the studio environment and the tools most typically used for portraiture before taking a detailed look at various lighting techniques for studio portraiture. The course consists of two sessions, each composed of a demonstration followed by a practical session during which students can put into practice the techniques demonstrated. The first sessions takes a simple approach working with a single studio light to give students an opportunity to become familiar with the challenges posed by working in the studio. The second session introduces more advanced lighting patterns using complex, multiple light set-ups and mixed light to develop student's understanding of creating sculptural portrait lighting. Along with the technical lighting aspects of portriature we also discuss interacting with and direting the sitter, styling the photograph and look briefly at grading and post-production approaches to bring the best out of our carefully considered lighting set-ups.
